Mouth Owwie Update

Standard

So, I went to the dentist (basically because of the shorter wait time).

Looks like I have an abscess/infection thing around one of my wisdom teeth.

I’m now on antibiotics and gargling large amounts of salt water.

Oh, and I have to get all four teeth out.

::whinges::

I don’t WANT to have them out.

So far, other than some (8 lbs) breast tissue, I’m still in possession of all my body parts.

I really wanted to keep it that way.

Unfortunately, I really want the pain to go away.

Grr.

Oh, and my Extraction Consultation isn’t until the end of the month.

Does that mean I’ll have to drink out of a straw until then?

About Angela

My name is Angela, but I answer to Ang, Andrea, and Mommy. I am 42 years old, but somehow feel both 26 and 149. Sometimes at the same time. I love Jesus, but hate at least 2/3rds of the humans He created. I consider myself a good wife but a lousy housekeeper. I love being a mother but don’t particularly like children. Quality time and sarcasm are my Love Languages. Yes! You absolutely can drop by, provided you give me 15 minutes to panic-clean and put on pants. I know that 1 in every 33 births result in multiples. I know that gap narrows to 1 in 12 for subsequent pregnancies. I know this is why my tubes are cut, burned, and tied. Not today, Satan. I can recite the entire script of The Princess Bride, (including accents) and believe that the meaning of life is contained within. Birth stories, theDodo.com, and Soldiers-returning-home videos make me happy-ugly-cry. Being interrupted, a poorly made bed, and that Christmas Shoes song make me want to punch somebody. I’m an extrovert with crushing social anxiety. To deal with stress, I crack jokes. They will be awkward and make the situation 10x worse. I can whistle and hum at the same time, but I cannot touch my toes. I look grand in orange, red, and pink, but rubbish in yellow and blue. I am a writer. I have a dog named Henri. I have a brother named Adam. They are not related. I am slightly neurotic. No I’m not. Yes I am.

  1. Well, I’m glad its all figured out. Wisdom tooth extraction isn’t as bad as you’d think.

Once your infection is taken care of, I think you’ll be back to normal. of course, I’m not your doctor/dentist, so don’t take my word for it.

    Hope you feel better soon!

  6. You have an abcess around it? Call the dentist again and demand that they work more quickly. An abcess can make you incredibly ill, and possibly ruin more teeth. If they refuse to help you, call your insurance company, lodge a formal complaint, and find a dentist who recognizes it as the emergency that it is. Even if they want you on antibiotics for a few days beforehand, it shouldn’t be more than a week.

And as an aside-you’ll be happier without the wisdom teeth. I was having horrible head and ear pain before I had mine out, and was amazed at how much better I felt with them gone. i thought it had been allergies and ear infections.

    • Is there a difference between an abscess and an infection?

I can’t recall if he actually SAID abscess or if that’s just something I came up with myself.

      Hmm.

PS. I’m glad to know that there are some people with GOOD wisdom tooth extraction stories. All I seem to hear are the horror-bits.

      • An abcess would be an infected pustule typically growing under the root of the tooth. If you ever needed to have a root canal, an abcess would be why. If left untreated, you could actually have half your face swell up, and you would start feeling very sick. I had one that my dentist did not seem capable of diagnosing (I got a tidy sum from them on that one), and I finally had to start shouting because of the pain I was in. Luckily, another dentist was there, and he took one look at my X-rays and said, “Oh, she has an abcess. Get her a root canal immediately.” I was sent to a specialist who did half the root canal, and put me on very strong antibiotics for a week before he could finish, because he could not give me enough novocaine to numb the site. It was horrible. I’ve had one root canal since then, and it was a breeze compared to the first. I say that just to let you know that if it is an abcess and not just an infection from the tissue becoming inflamed because your wisdom teeth are growing in wrong, then you need to have it taken care of sooner rather than later. Seriously.

And see? The horror story was so much more fun to read than the easy, drug-filled extraction of my wisdom teeth, so that is the one that I elaborated on. They put me under, popped them out (one was fused to my jaw, hence the strong drugs for pain…yummy vicodin!), and Bob’s your uncle. Drank lots of milkshakes and broth and was doted on for a week. Fun!

  15. Oh, so sorry to hear about your infection.

Maybe I’m twisted (my mom was an orthodontic assistant for years and then moved onto be a dental assistant)…so I’m sort of excited for you concerning your wisdom teeth!!

I had impacted wisdom teeth and had all 4 taken out at the same time. The cool part was being able to keep my wisdom teeth…I still have them in a box with all my kid stuff at my parent’s house. Anyway – the cool thing is that they have really long roots.

    I know…call me weird.

I love going to the dentist and all that jazz. I have all my retainers – my favorite was the one that was in a design of the American Flag with stars and sparkles all over it. (I used to collect American and Korean flags and the orthodontist didn’t have any Korean designs)

Anyway…I hope your pain goes away quickly. Try not to worry about the wisdom teeth, though. 🙂

  24. Dental surgery is very nice. You get lots of pain meds, sleep a lot and you’re actually not supposeed to drink out of a straw… the sucking action is apparently bad for oral healing. I’ve had surgery three times on the same place and it was great each time. You just won’t be able to laugh for a few days.

Don’t worry so much 🙂 *hugs*

      • Yeah, that’s the bad part. My cousin had hers out a few years ago and we chose the day after her surgery to watch Shrek for the first time…

…she’s never been the same since.

But, if it makes you feel better, I had my appendix out and kept making me burst into hysterical giggles. She makes me do that at the most inopportune moments. For example, I’ll never, ever, ever take large pills with orange juice again.

    • Yeah, I’ve been putting the whole thing off for about 5 years.

This is the first infection I’ve had though, so I’m kind of freaked out by the whole thing.
